Time management is a myth
Time management is a myth. It creates the illusion that you can actually manage time and nothing could be further from the truth. Time is a limited, non-renewable resource. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. We all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Non-negotiable.
Hyperefficiency is counter-productive long term
Time management is primarily aimed at being hyper-efficient with time so that more stuff can be crammed into the working day. That is not living life to the fullest. Being hyper-efficient can lead to all sorts of issues and can come with a high price to pay. More busyness, more stress, anxiety and burnout. Health, relationships, fun and enjoyment under serious pressure. I have lived through that, and I can tell you, it was not a walk in the park. It taught me a big lesson, time and energy is precious, so better invest it wisely.
Sure, there are some great time management tips, tools and techniques available, but they have to match the way you think and work. We’re just not all wired in the same way. If the tool or technique helps you to be more organised and productive, great. If not, ditch it.
Productivity is not the same as time management
Productivity is often considered synonymous with time management. That’s another myth. Productive also doesn’t mean busy, you can do much more in much less time when you invest your time and energy on purpose. When you approach being productive in a balanced way, it makes the difference between living the life you want or not.
Productivity as Leadership
To me productivity means leadership, in business as well as your personal life. You need a clear vision, good strategies and ways to execute. Some people are better with the ideas than with the implementation, others are real do-ers, but fall down on creating a clear vision which often means being very busy, but not getting the desired results. When you know what your patterns are, you can deal with them.
And then there is that ugly self-sabotage, that we are all familiar with, getting in the way of achieving that what we want. That involves mindset, emotions and our habits. The good news is that we can re-wire our brain to master our mind, emotions and behaviour to work with us rather than against us.
To bring in the balance we need self-care for body, mind and spirit. This is also an important part of your productivity and creating the life and business you choose. You could be surprised how much more productive you get when you relax and calm your mind.
