How feeling good helps you to feel more productive
What makes you productive is not just time management techniques, your willpower or your planning. Your feelings and emotions actually play an important role in your productivity. Does that surprise you? Have you ever tried to think yourself productive? It’s impossible, unless you produce a change in the way you feel. For example, when you’re procrastinating, you know that something needs to be done, you’re having that internal dialogue, but you’re still not taking action. Something is in the way and the clue is in how you feel. So, how can you change this and feel productive?
Feel productive by feeling good about your goals
Change and growth starts with a goal, with the end in mind. You need to be aware of what you want to achieve to be able to create a plan to get there. Some people don’t even set goals, because of the way they feel about goalsetting. Goals give us direction and guidance for focused action. Goals are not there to trip us up, they are there to help us grow. Goals need to feel expansive, not like you want to go and hide under the table or hibernate for a couple of months. Never set goals based only on what you think you should be achieving, you will be setting yourself up to fail. When you feel good about the goals you set you are more likely to achieve them. Even if the action steps you need to take are taking you outside your comfort zone. Formulate your goals so that the end result feels good and exciting and consider why you set the goal. The why will keep you going even if it is taking you places you’ve never been before.
Feel productive by feeling good about your day-to-day actions
Most people tend to overestimate what they can do in a day, so ‘to-do’-list can become a real source of busyness. Without the right actions, priorities and balanced allocation of time that day-to-day busyness just causes more stress and pressure. What do you really need to focus on to achieve your goals? How can you allocate your time smarter to the things that really matter most (and is it really you who needs to do that thing)? Having a clear focused plan of action steps that you want to complete makes a massive difference, even if you have little time every day. What is the one thing you can do to move the needle in your business? The key here is to connect your actions back to your goals and why you want to achieve them.
Feel productive by feeling good about completing your action steps
If you want to grow your business and create different results then you most likely need different actions. That can take you outside of your comfort zone, throwing up all sorts of feelings for the purpose of keeping you ‘safe’ with what you know. When you have negative emotions, fear, worry or stress around your actions, you’re not going to be at your most productive. But, when you have a strong why for achieving your goals and you start thinking about your action steps in terms of actions that you want to complete (instead of things that you have to or should do), feelings shift. When you take action with good feelings, you become more productive.
Celebrate every step along the way
It’s easy to forget or ignore the things we do and focus on what we haven’t done yet. As you progress with your actions towards your goals you easily forget the place you started is not where you are now, you have moved forward. Cultivating the habit of celebrating, gratitude and acknowledgement for every step along the way that you complete, not just for the big wins, will make you feel good about your achievements, brings awareness and sets you up for success. Completion feels good (your brain loves completion), so make sure you complete something (even if it is a small part of a bigger project) every day that moves you towards your goals.
You can keep a completion or achievement log and surprise yourself how much you can achieve in 90 days. 90 days is long enough to create results and short enough to keep you engaged.
Finally, surrounding yourself with people who are positive and supportive is crucial. Surrounding yourself with other people who have goals that they want to achieve and are prepared to do something about it, makes a massive difference in shifting the way you feel, think and behave. People who take ownership of what they want in life make a difference. It is your choice, you can decide to live your life or life will be living you.
