The signs that you are on track for burnout
What are the signs for burnout? You may be burning out and not even realise. The thing is, from time to time we can all feel that things get on top of us and we need a break. Things can get a bit stressful, that’s part of life. Stressful events can happen in all areas of your life whether that’s work, relationships, children, family … It all adds up. Something seemingly small and insignificant can tip the balance and then it happens…
Burnout is physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. Burnout is a response to a series of negative stressful events. It is a sign that you are out of alignment with yourself.
But how did this all of the sudden happen?
Burnout creeps in. You just missed the signs. Have you ever experienced when you come home and you finally sit down, you only then notice how tired you really are? It is not that you are all of the sudden tired, it’s that you hadn’t been listening to what your body was telling you. That’s how burnout gets you trapped.
The signs for burnout
One of the most obvious signs for burnout is feeling constantly exhausted, overextended and drained. But there are many other signs. Stress affects the immune system, so you may be experiencing more frequent colds, other chronic and acute illness. Frequent headaches are also common. Although you’re tired, you may experience insomnia or other sleeping issues. You might be trying to force yourself to cope whatever the cost and attempt to alleviate the issues with self-defeating behaviours like overeating, smoking, drinking, painkillers or other drugs.
Burnout affects you mentally and emotionally
Concentration and focus are out of the window. Welcome overwhelm, procrastination, lack of achievement, a sense of failure and ineffectiveness. Because you’re so exhausted, you start to feel detached and go through your day on autopilot. You’d rather withdraw and just ignore everything and everyone. It becomes more and more difficult to deal with others, feeling irritable, resentful and cynical. Chances are that your nearest and dearest are on the receiving end of your sudden outbursts. You’ve lost that passion and drive you once had and you just don’t feel you.
Burnout is a bad place to be, I know this from experience. But, there is a way out.
A good night sleep will not make it go away.
Burnout can happen to anyone
It can happen to anyone, especially if you’re a passionate, loyal overachiever who everyone can depend on. You are the type of person that has a lot of plates spinning and you want to do everything right, first time, every time. You have that persistence and inner toughness that keeps you going.
The truth is that you’re not a superhuman.
When your inner battery is empty, it can take a long time to recover. Rest and relaxation alone is not enough. A total shift needs to take place in mindset and emotions, bringing yourself back into alignment with who you are from within. Otherwise, burnout will happen again!
